With 13 rural pubs in Britain closing each week*, the Honeystreet villagers have won a Big Lottery Fund grant of £273840 to buck the trend and save their local, the Barge Inn, which was at risk of closure. The villagers will to purchase the Barge Inns lease and operate it as a social enterprise, securing its future at the heart of the local community. The venture will also help to support tourism in Honeystreet, which is well known for the local crop circle phenomena and popular canal system, which runs right by the 200-year-old inn. Complementary enterprises such as a village shop and craft and drama workshops will also operate within the pub, and employment and learning opportunities for local people will be created. Their Village Champion is Sandra Bhatia, a talented project manager with a background in music events.

Feeling the need for a change, is it time to move on from the family home and reap the benefits of retirement village living? Here the top 10 benefits of this retirement option.

1. Social Activities

Organized social activities are a great way to spend your days. One of the best things about these events is you get to just go along and participate and it’s a great way to meet and interact with the other residents. With options such as bingo, cards, lawn bowls and exercise classes the time will just fly.

2. Facilities

With a great range of facilities like swimming pool, library, cafés, restaurants and even in some cases golf courses and waterfront access. It’s easy to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle whilst taking advantage of the great facilities on offer.

3. Lifestyle

For many as we become older those around you become more important as you now have more time to socialize. By being part of complex living you are part of the community and those around you who have like minded values and ideals.

4. Downsizing

After all the children have moved on and you find your family home is now far too large for the two of you, downsizing offers the perfect solution. In most cases this will give you more money to play with and ensure less effort as the smaller villas are easier to clean and maintain. Think of all the exciting ways you could spend the extra money.

          ]]>

5. Travel

Feeling drawn to travel and have an adventure but not confidant enough to do it alone? Many villages offer organized group travel to a variety of destinations. This is the perfect option as, you get to have all the same wonderful experiences whilst being comfortable and safe in the group environment surround by similar aged individuals.

6. Maintenance

Maintaining your home and even simple changing a light bulb can become a challenging and worrying situation. However when you are part of the village they are responsible for many aspects of this and also have onsite workers to complete this. They even will come change and fix those pesky light bulbs and sinks.

7. Onsite Medical Facilities

Many of the top villages will have different degrees of medical services onsite. This is particularly helpful to those individuals who suffer from severe medical conditions as it gives you the peace of mind that you will still be close to your loved one. Many now have onsite nursing home and special needs care, this is important to looking into when you are deciding what retirement village to move to.

8. Transport

Driving can become difficult and often stressful the older we get, by being in a village that offers transport services you can feel assured that you will always be able to get to the shops and other important local destinations. This is also great as you don’t have to rely on others or feel you will be alone and isolated.

9. Security

Feeling safe and secure is important to all of us, particularly as we become older. By living within the village you get a sense of both physical and mental security. You can feel assured that those around you are looking out for you and your property, and help is only a call away.

10. Peace of Mind

By being part of the like-minded community it can make you both happy and increase your social interaction. Also by being around people you know and feel safe with it helps to reduce anxiety and the fear of isolation.

Start your search for exceptional Toronto Homes for sale, and consider – one of the few Toronto “villages” to live up to its name! Affectionately known as”a small village in a big city” – Bloor West Village has the distinction of being one of the first communities (in the early 1970′s) to establish a very successful BIA (business improvement area). This model of rejuvenation has been utilized in many urban centres throughout North America and has shaped the amazing shopping district that exists here today.

The Bloor West Village neighbourhood lies just north of Bloor St. West- just east of Jane St and just west of High Park with easy access routes to 2 subway stations (Runnymede and Jane) as well as the Gardiner Expressway and Lakeshore routes for easy access to the central Toronto core. Lake Ontario and the Martin Goodman trail with its extensive walking and cycling paths is also nearby.

Leave your car behind and stroll along the dense 10 block section of Bloor St. W that is officially “the Village” and experience its energetic vibe and many charming European style shops. There are over 400 shops, eateries and services here – cafes, boutique stores, specialty food and meat shops, amazing bakeries and abundant green grocers (some featuring organic produce).Shoppers return again and again, making Bloor West Village one of the more popular shopping districts in Toronto, Ontario. Looking to keep fit – Bloor West Village is also a growingly active neighbourhood with several studios and gyms that have opened over the past few years. The Village has something for everyone!

          ]]>

What is it like to live here one might ask? Singles and families love to call it home and are drawn to this welcoming mature neighbourhood with abundant towering maples and oak trees and green spaces – for a variety of reasons.

Unlike the suburbs, with their cookie cutter houses – typical Bloor West Village homes constructed between 1912-1925 have a lot to offer. Originally similar in size and style most homes are now often quite unique due to personalization, renovation & expansion over the years! These 2 storey 3-4 bedroom brick detached and semi detached homes feature wonderful wide traditional porches ( enjoy a book or your morning coffee – or watch your children play), lots of wood trim and accents throughout, fireplaces and hardwood floors.

Recently it has become common to see small homes on larger lots replaced with modern new builds- so there is also a blend of old and new. Private drives are a rarity. It is the city – after all! Parking pads, laneways or the very common mutual drive are the standard parking options. Many residents use street parking, or “think green” and take the very convenient subway or the new cycle pathway along Annette St to get around. Zip and Autoshare cars are available in designated parking lots.

A family oriented community with several recreation centres, parkettes and a wide selection of great schools offering a variety of good music & sports programs, as well as French Immersion. Choose from Annette Public School, Runnymede Public School, Humberside Collegiate School, Western Technical School St. Pius X and St Cecilia Catholic Schools- or 2 privately run Montessori schools.

Another wonderful neighbourhood draw, is the close proximity to the city’s biggest park – High Park! Just a brisk walk or short subway ride away- this 399 acre city landmark features manicured gardens, a large outdoor pool & wading pool, Jamie Bell Adventure Playground (an incredible wooden “castle-like” structure) designed by children in 1998, picnic areas, tennis courts animal paddocks & tranquil Grenadier pond along the southerly park limits- near Lake Ontario. The westerly section of Bloor West Village is steps to Etienne Brule Park- near historic Old Mill. A pretty meandering green space- it features extensive walking and cycling paths adjacent to the Humber River, as well as scenic picnic areas.
